For the first time, CACE  will feature a spring conference designed for leadership teams.

“Continuous Improvement That Works: Harnessing the Power of School Improvement Practices to Achieve Success” will be presented by WestEd’s Terry Hofer and Kevin Perks and focus on supporting district based teams through the challenges of school improvement. The conference is scheduled for April 12-13, 2023 at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth, Mass.

During the two-day conference, participants will become familiar with high leverage practices for driving improvement efforts, including simulated school improvement activities. Teams will use these experiences to process key takeaways and reflect on how to lead consistent implementation of high-priority initiatives. On the second day, participants will revisit their own school-specific priorities and consider how school improvement practices can be incorporated to assess, adapt, monitor and respond to improvement goals. In the end, all participants will walk out with tasks, practices, routines designed to advance priority initiatives.

Join WestEd and the Center on School Turnaround and Improvement at the National ESEA Conference, which will be held on February 1–4, at the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indiana.

This year’s theme for the hybrid event is “Lift Up,” emphasizing evidence-based practices to lift up students to reach their potential through maximized access and expanded opportunities. With 130 sessions, the conference also focuses on high-quality professional development and collaboration and partnership, lifting up educators and administrators, parents and families.

Conference lectures and sessions are organized by strands and explore challenges faced in federal education programs, including family involvement and engagement, cultural understanding and support, and developing practices that ensure the success of every child, regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, language, ability, sexual orientation, or income.

On Thursday, Feb.4, WestEd’s Dr. Terry Hofer will present “A Strengths-Based Approach to Rapidly Improving Schools.” Terry  helps lead WestEd’s Center on School Turnaround and Improvement. In his presentation,  participants will hear examples of how strengths were prioritized and built to foster conditions for rapid school improvement.

This hands-on session will explore two free resources that can help leverage family engagement to improve student outcomes at the school and district level: The “Family Engagement Toolkit: Continuous Improvement through an Equity Lens” and the “Self-Reflection Tool for Family Engagement.” These resources are grounded in the Dual Capacity-Building Framework and support a continuous improvement process with a focus on engaging underrepresented families.

Learn the keys to engaging in impactful school improvement work that moves beyond compliance alone. Leaders from the Delaware Department of Education and a Delaware local education agency will share their story of working together to create an effective needs assessment and school improvement process. External partners who led the development and implementation of the research-grounded Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement Framework as well as the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL) will also share insights.

Session: Providing English Learners and Other Students Deep and Generative Opportunities to Learn
Presenter: Aída Walqui

This presentation makes the case that rigorous and deep learning occurs when students are invited to engage in activity that is intellectually honest and that challenges and supports them. Dr. Walqui will present five principles that define quality instruction in classrooms where students who are English learners study alongside native speakers of English. Participants will understand and recognize how these principles are applied to instruction that simultaneously develops students’ conceptual, analytic, and language practices deeply.
